Politics 101: Increasing Awareness and Understanding about Politics
What is the meaning of Politics? Politics are all activities involving the government, including debate and conflicts among individuals or parties hoping and having to achieve power. Politics is a process of decision-making, exercising and achieving positions of governance, in order to have an organized control over a specific human community, such as a state. Politics deploys different methods including promotion of political views, warfare against adversaries, law-making, and exercising of force from tribes or clans of traditional societies, interactions with private companies and institutions, local governments and sovereign states.
Political system is defined as the framework that defines acceptable political methods in a given society. There are two categories of politics that include formal and informal politics, wherein formal politics is the operation the government system using a constitutional system, publicly defined by institutions and procedures, while informal politics refers to alliances and those that includes activities of daily life. States are classified into aristocracies, monarchies, democracies, theocracies, tyrannies, and oligarchies, but no form of government could be regarded as absolute best.
Great powers rule on underlying sovereignty or sovereign power, vested to an individual as in autocratic government, or a group as in a constitutional form of state. Jurisprudence defines sovereignty as the power and full right to govern without any hindrance from outside bodies. On the other hand, constitution refers to written documents specifying and limiting the powers of the various government branches. Political system refers to the processes, policies, behavior and practices involving the legal system, cultural system, economic system and social system of the citizens or the voting body. Political system’s sociological interest is distinguishing the one who holds the power, its people and how the power of the government is used.
Voting system greatly impacts politics, which is consists of set of rules which is followed for a vote to be considered legal and valid, cast, counted and combined to yield a result toward a referendum or election. Electoral system determines the form of ballot, allowable votes and the counting method that dictates the result of the outcome, which may be a single winner like the presidency, or multiple winners, like a legislative body. Majority of elections base the results from the principle of “one person, one vote”, which bear equal weight, but this is not true to all elections., which shows that voting power differs from voting weight.
Political point of views and conflict, political issues and political dilemmas varies from one state to another, and from one country to another, though there are similarities in structure, ideas, concept and resolutions, involving the different social class, economic status and cultural background.
